Monsoon treks in the Western Ghats come with real river crossings — not the postcard kind, the kind where the water is fast, brown, and rising. This one taught our whole group something about moving carefully, trusting the rope, and waiting your turn.
A few things we always do now on monsoon-season trips:
- Never cross a swollen stream alone — always with a rope line and a guide anchored on both banks
- Check water levels before and after rain, not just at the start of the day
- Pack a dry bag for anything you can't afford to get wet
- Turn back if the water looks faster than it did an hour ago — it usually is
None of this is meant to scare you off monsoon trips — some of the most beautiful stretches of the Ghats only look like this in the rain. It's just why we go with people who've done the crossing before, and why we never rush it.
